It looks very simple for a browser based massively multiplayer online RPG (MMORPG), but oGame has plenty in store even for the casual player who is looking for some way to spend the time on the Internet without having to memorize a lot of things. The game has been around for roughly more than a decade now, a fact which is testament to its appeal to the gaming community.
The premise of this MMORPG is quite simple. You are a colonizer. You land your troops and society into a planet of your choosing, and then it is your job to mine that planet for resources to support your forces’ colonization and settlements. In addition, you have to manage those resources to both feed and support your fledgling settlements while also transforming it militarily until it becomes a force to reckon with.
At the beginning, the planet is a rich but barren landscape. Your first concern should be to create the necessary facilities to gather the needed resources which, are, in the case, Deuterium, Metal and Crystals. Once you have these structures built, they will produce resources periodically and over a period of time. Take note that they will also consume energy, so it requires calculating how much energy each structure is going to consume to prevent your energy reserves from hitting the negative.
There is also a Resource called the Dark Matter, which is the premium currency for the game. Dark Matter is needed in order to accelerate construction, to purchase special items for your Starfleet and others.
The game’s strong point is its interface. The word best used to describe the game’s user interface is “intuitive.” You can learn quickly what you need to do in a few minutes after logging into your account. Your first move, as mentioned earlier, is to build the necessary Deuterium Synthesizers, Solar Plants, and Crystal and Metal Mines. All of these can be done by simple clicks of the mouse.
In fact, that is what drives the entirety of the game. There are no keyboard shortcuts here for you to remember, and no graphics-heavy cutscenes to burden your server and bandwidth with. oGame is a game that is played out simply with clicks of the mouse, and nothing else. Everything you need is in your console and just awaits your exploration.
You can actually just leave this game on to work in the background once you have done what you need to do in a certain period of time. The platform generates the necessary Deuterium, Energy, Metals and Crystals for you hourly, and will only stop once your facilities’ storage and production limit has been met. Only then do you need to do something like spending your resources on your fleet and settlements, and that only takes a few minutes or so.
The game features great artwork to give your imagination an idea what kind of world you are working in. Had you not been aware that you’re playing a game, you’ll think that you’re looking at screenshots of an upcoming sci-fi movie when viewing the artwork in oGame.
