You might want to go through the training course first. In this training course, your role is to destroy as many enemy fighters and support vessels that follow them as you can before you get killed yourself. Mind you, this training is just a simulation of the real thing and is intended to give you a taste at what’s in store for you when you finally start joining games.
Take a look at the bottom right corner of the screen. You can see how extensive the armament of your space fighter is. You have a choice of three machine guns, and one missile launcher. In addition to that, you also have countermeasures that can help you in defending yourself against your enemies. Be sure to spend some time memorizing the numbers besides each weapon or countermeasure - those are hot keys that lets you toggle between each one of them quick.
Microsoft Allegiance can be a bit disorienting at the start. You’d wonder why you aren’t moving at all, but that’s in-game vertigo, thanks to the cockpit view that lets you see everything in first person. You’d see an icon that says, “Enemy fighter” but you don’t see the fighter in sight. It’s quite deceiving, but your fighter can hover in space while everyone around it moves.
Be sure to look at the numbers - they indicate your distance to said enemy or space object.
Controlling your spacecraft can be a challenge to you. What you need are the numerical pads and not the usual A,S,W and D buttons to steer it around. It takes some time to memorize, but you can easily get the hang of it if you keep on playing.
After the training mission, it’s time to move on to the actual combat. Go to the Main Page, click on Join Games, and you can find a lot of games that you can join in. You can also create your own. There are various PvP modes to choose from too, including the ubiquitous Team Deathmatch.
