Sail the seas of the Caribbean in The Pirate: Plague of the Dead and command the most fearsome pirates in the continent.
Take the role of John Rackham, manage your ship, command captains, and recruit your crew.
Go through the game’s story as a you blast cannons against enemy ships.
Most pirate games online are rather bright and bubbly. One notable example would be Sid Meier’s Pirates, which was well-loved back years ago. If you’re looking for something darker, not realistic, and not seemingly based off a Saturday morning cartoon, then The Pirate: Plague of the Dead may be your best bet. Though it does a good job of staying PG-13, it has darker themes you will be familiar with if you’ve seen Pirates of the Caribbean. It is available for free on Steam and both mobile platforms, iOS and Android. Is the game full of booty, or is it a complete shipwreck? Let’s find out:
John Rackham was a British pirate, who plied his “trade” in the Bahamas and Cuba. In Pirate: The Plague of the Dead, you will be wearing his hat, strapping his boots, sailing his ship, and follow his story. In a nutshell, it follows the events of its prequel The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt. Without diving much into spoilers, the story feels new and may not appear to be in a sequence which means you can get jump right in and play. However, don’t expect anything like a well-written Hollywood script. The story is subpar at best and the way it is presented is reminiscent of old games in the early 2000s. Dialogue boxes simply appear, containing text which shows the characters interacting with each other, which is rather dull.
From the get-go, The Pirate: Plague of the Dead will make you go through a series of quests which acts as a tutorial. Your primary tasks will include doing things like getting a larger ship, a recruiting crew, familiarizing yourself with the controls, managing your ship, selling cargo, searching treasure islands, engaging in exciting battles against various ships from other countries. Though this sounds rather exciting, the way it is executed leaves a lot to be desired because you will end up following various prompts and reading text boxes. Add the fact that the user interface is rather plain and clunky, a navigating through the menus is a dull experience.
The Pirate: Plague of the Dead’s best element aren’t the battles, but it’s role-playing elements. Although you will start off with a smaller ship, a bigger and stronger one will be given to you within the first 15 minutes. With that said, you will get to manage every aspect of your fleet and crew, especially when you capture new ships. You can either outfit them with cannons or simply use them as cargo ships where you can store your loot. Remember though, they always need to have enough crew members to sail well. You can also customize your ships, changing their flags and appearance.
The game prides itself as having a lively, sandbox open world. However, it doesn’t feel like it. There are rarely any ships to fight against and though there’s a fast-forward option, the game is still quite slow. Moreover, you don’t navigate from place to place in the world itself: you primarily have to access destinations from the map. Battles are fast-paced and exciting. You can fire weapons like mortars and cannon fire. The latter has different ammunition, like grape shot and chain shot, which have various effects. For example, the grape shot can be used to kill off the enemy crew instead of destroying the ship.
Overall, The Pirate: Plague of the Dead is a fantastic game with outstanding triple A level graphics and immersive gameplay. Although its user interface and menus are a little clunky, managing your ship, captains, and crew is a joy and will keep you entertained for hours. It’s the perfect game for you if you’re looking to sail the high seas and be an infamous swashbuckling buccaneer. The Pirate: Plague of the Dead Summary
