There are a lot of different classes in MMORPGs so it can get rather confusing for newcomers when it comes to deciding what class they want to play as. In this article we’ll be analyzing all the common classes in a bit more detail so you can figure out which one suits your play-style the most.

Fighter

First and foremost, let's take a look at the Fighter (a.k.a. Warrior or Berserker). This is definitely the most generic melee-based MMORPG class out there since it’s found in pretty much every single game of this genre. The fighter class is pretty versatile which is exactly why it’s so popular. Fighters can deal a pretty good amount of AoE damage but at the same time they can take a lot of hits as well (but not as much as a Tank). This versatility makes Fighters a really sought after class that pretty much everyone wants in their party. Although they primarily act in a damage-dealing capacity in a raid, they can also be built in such a way that Fighters can become the team's off-tank if needed.

Healer

Healers, also referred to as Priests, do exactly what the name implies. Not a lot of people play this class because their gameplay doesn’t revolve around wreaking havoc on every single monster that comes in their path. Instead, this is a more supportive class. The role of a priest/healer is to facilitate their party/teammates with healing, energy shields (or as veteran MMO gamers would call them - "bubbles" or "hamster balls"), buffs and various other supportive effects so that they can stay strong and take down any foe that comes their way.

Tank

Tanks are another highly common MMORPG class. They don’t offer much in terms of damage but instead they exist for the purpose of soaking up as much damage as possible so that the damage dealers can do their job without getting picked apart by mobs. Due to this, Tanks often feature a wide array of self buffs that they can use in order to take hits without losing a lot of HP. Tanks are also often depicted with some form of shield or shielding. They even come with a whole bunch of disruptive abilities as well that can be used to peel enemies off their party members.

Mage

Going by a variety of names ranging from Wizards and Witches to Elementalist and Necromancers, Mages are the go-to, AoE class in almost every single MMORPG. They have the potential to deal devastating amounts of damage in a specific area and kill pretty much every single thing that was in said area. Mages also have various ways to debuff their opponents and weaken their damage output. However, while this class excels at long range, they’re pretty fragile if someone or something can manage to get within melee range of them.

Assassins

Assassins (a.k.a. rogues or thieves) are the one of the two common pure damage classes. They have the potential to deal obscene amounts of damage in a really short burst of time and then get out without taking a single hit. Assassins have multitudes of abilities that they can chain together to stun lock their opponent, deal their damage and get out without a scratch. This class is near impossible to deal with in a 1v1 scenario but at the same time they’re rather weak when facing multiple opponents at the same time.

Archers

Archers, also known as rangers or hunters, are the second common pure damage class in MMORPGs. They have the potential to absolutely obliterate anyone that comes within their firing range. Archers usually have a lot of traps and crowd control effects under their sleeves and unlike assassins, they usually have a bunch of AoE abilities as well that can be used to deal with multiple foes at once. However, they’re extremely weak in head to head combat so they’re as good as dead if an enemy can get up close to them.

All the aforementioned classes are those that you’re bound to find in almost every single MMORPG worth its salt. Keep all this information in mind when picking your class and you’re sure to end up with one that fits your play-style.
