MMO Square - Is Fortnite Really Safe for Kids?

Since its initial release in 2017, Fortnite has grown leaps and bounds and has become one of the most era-defining games of the last generation. It initially started as a third-person battle royale, and since then, it has branched out to game-creation platforms and a way to build your own base and hang out spot akin to Minecraft. Moreover, it collaborated with many musical artists and comic book franchises, hence the Marvel and DC skins.

As parents, if your child is playing Fortnite, you probably have a few valid concerns. After all, it’s a battle royale game involving guns, shooting, and playing with strangers online. In turn, this leads us to ask: is Fortnite safe for kids?

What can kids learn in Fortnite?

Fortnite tie-in with Marvel

One of the best things about Fortnite is its wide selection of creative tools Fortnite Creative. Apart from diving into the battlefield via the battle bus, players have access to their own island. Here, they’ll be able to construct anything using many of the game’s building pieces. Plus, they could even create activities and fun games with their peers. The game has become an alternative to Minecraft, and with them having access to countless player-made games (from platformers to escape rooms), they will have lots of options of things to do.

Fortnite Creative is like a digital canvas where kids can create masterpieces, enabling them to express themselves more. It can also boost logic and encourage experimentation via its many game and activity creation tools. We can’t say much about the battle royale mode, although it boosts hand-eye coordination and lets kids make fast decisions, especially during battles.

Community and online

Fortnite has a massive community, with millions of players going online every day. Kids will most likely spend most of their time in battle royale mode. Whenever they play with a squad or duos with random players, they can potentially get paired up with those oozing with toxicity. With that in mind, it would be best to have kids play with their circle of friends or with individuals you know.

So, is Fortnite safe for kids?

Is Fortnite safe for kids

Generally, yes, if you’re ok with your kids playing shooting games.

Fortnite is one of those games where shooting looks kid-friendly and even cartoonish, a total opposite of franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield. There’s no blood or anything remotely R-18. In fact, the game has a T rating. If you permit your kids to play shooting games, then it is a safe bet over other battle royale games like PUBG and H1Z1 and other shooting games in general.

Concerns when playing online with randoms are valid. After all, not everyone is on their best behavior in Fortnite, and kids are always the target of bullies and ill-mannered adults. You can quickly avert the possibility of your child getting bullied by fiddling with the in-game settings by turning off voice chat. In addition, the character designs are age-appropriate. There's nothing overly revealing or suggestive, and the fanservice is nonexistent.

In-game elements to talk to your kids about

All in all, although Fortnite is safe for kids, it would be a good idea to sit down and talk to your kids about:

- Guns and shooting.
- How they should behave online.
- The best way to avoid online bullies.

So, what do you think? Is Fortnite really safe for kids, and will you let them play the game? If you need to know more about it, check out this Fortnite review here.
