MMOs are keen to provide less compelling stories compared to straightforward console RPGs. Instead, to render quite the lore in the game, they tend to share backing plots with famous myth and legends - oftentimes a bit more familiar to the players. In this short article, we'll discuss "MMO’s Great Following to Myths and Legends".

It is to no surprise that many MMOs find great use to myths or legends, to pitch in some kind of lore within their games – for they provide players with something that they could relate about and find a great rendition with. Take for instance one of the pioneers of MMO games, Ragnarok – which finds its backing origins from the famous Norse mythology. In this game, the world is governed by the god odin, and is at an impending struggle to the prepare for the upcoming Ragnarok (end of the world).

Captivated by the backing plot, patch releases were named after the great events that were similar to original Norse myth. Not limited to this, a few in-game quests were also portraying great relevance to the highlights of the original mythology. Most of these were not availed by the players that were simply been dragged by peers to play the game (as the game lets anyone to just progress in the levels by killing monsters). But to those that were trailing for the lore in the game, a few henchmen pitches you in some breadcrumb trailing of the actual happenings in that world – relevant to the famous Norse myths.

And then there are the games that looked forward to Legends to gain instant familiarity to plausible players of the game. Such as the game Khan (from the early days of MMOs) – that took the origins of its backing plot from the great Mongolian conqueror Khan, who created a great legend among his epic conquests in the medieval times. Set in the same era in the game, players fuel their journey in great hopes to re-live the great achievements of the famed conqueror.

As we have witnessed through the years of growth of MMOs, a lot of the in-game details were focused on bringing balance among the different types of characters in the game, expansion of the game world, battle arenas, and the actual gameplay. As for the backing story – not so much. Perhaps the reason was that they did not find great use to it.

At the time too, the fact that thousands of players can converge at a single game world already brought great amusement to the lot of participants – eager to just dive in the new talk in town. As for the accompanying story or lore within the games, they were merely put in place to become accessory elements of the game to bring more color to it, than holding it whole in shape.

That is probably the great cause and following of famous myths and legends to MMOs up until today – to bring more color to the game world that everyone simply enjoys to put themselves in. The option to run about a lore in the game is readily available to those that are interested, and is still by all means playable - if you didn’t want to take part in any of it.
