First officially revealed on October 7, 2021, Honkai: Star Rail is the fourth title in the Honkai universe released by HoYoverse, the ones that have brought you the well-known game of Genshin Impact. There have been many rumors regarding the final launch date to which characters will be available in the game present in previous titles. In this article, we will dive into some of the finer details of these topics and give you a clearer view of things.

The Story

As with most role-playing games, one of the most important aspects of the game is the story setting and the development of the characters. The story continues where Honkai Impact 3rd left off with Welt Yang. He was a crucial figure in the story of that game and had been sent to a parallel universe, where the plot of Honkai: Star Rail picks up.

From the player’s perspective, you play as a protagonist, the Trailblazer, an artificial human embedded with the power of destruction. Through a series of fateful encounters, you can now use the “Star Rail,” the interstellar train prominently featured in the game. Setting out on an adventure through the unknown, you will meet and befriend a multitude of companions (some of which fans of the Honkai series will recognize, such as Himeko, Seele, Bronya, and many more!), and work your way towards uncovering the solution to your predicament.

Combat and Gameplay

Deviating quite significantly from their previous titles, Honkai: Star Rail is a turn-based tactical RPG akin to a Final Fantasy game. The feel of the combat is most reminiscent of Final Fantasy X, with the turns of the characters and enemies shown to the side while your protagonists have some friendly banter, even during the fights.

As for the combat, the game utilizes the elemental system that most RPGs have, with a little mix of uniqueness, such as the addition of elements such as “Quantum” and “Imaginary.” Prioritizing elemental weakness usually spells success for your team, so keep that in mind before entering combat. You can also glean into the enemy’s weakness before combat and do a pre-emptive strike which will grant your team a bonus depending on which character you are currently controlling.

Launch Date and Other Important Notes

As of writing, Honkai: Star Rail is currently running its Final Beta Test for players, and there has not been an official announcement regarding the final launch date of the game. However, rumor has it that it will be released on the 26th of April, 2023. But do take this information with a grain of salt, as this is solely based on the fact that it has been listed as such on the iOS store.

On another note, there has been no news that there will be any PvP mode in the game, which is in line with the other titles that HoYoverse has released so far. This is due to their belief that such game modes instill a sense of over-competitiveness and the need to constantly spend to “keep up” in the ranks, but that is a subject for another time.
